Overview
Oneworld, stylized as “oneworld,” is a global airline alliance consisting of 15 member airlines, founded on February 1, 1999, with headquarters located in Fort Worth, Texas since December 2022. The alliance's current membership includes Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and SriLankan Airlines. Like the other major global alliances, Oneworld lets member airlines coordinate codeshare flights, reciprocal frequent-flyer benefits, and shared airport lounge access, giving passengers a more seamless experience when connecting between different member carriers. Oneworld is one of the three major global airline alliances, alongside Star Alliance and SkyTeam, together accounting for the large majority of scheduled international air travel worldwide.
History
Oneworld was founded on February 1, 1999, as American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and several other carriers sought to compete more effectively with the recently formed Star Alliance by offering their own coordinated global route network and shared passenger benefits. The alliance expanded its membership steadily through the 2000s and 2010s, adding carriers across different regions to build out a more comprehensive global network competitive with its larger rival alliances. Oneworld moved its headquarters to Fort Worth, Texas in December 2022, reflecting American Airlines' significant role within the alliance given its status as one of the world's largest airlines. Oneworld has continued to refine its member benefits and network coordination since its founding, remaining one of the three dominant global airline alliances alongside Star Alliance and SkyTeam.
