Overview
A rudder is a primary control surface used to steer a vehicle moving through a fluid medium, and on an airplane it's used primarily to counter adverse yaw and P-factor rather than serving as the main means of turning the aircraft, which is instead accomplished mainly through banking with the ailerons. A rudder works by redirecting airflow past the aircraft's tail, imparting a yawing motion around the vertical axis. In basic form, a rudder is a flat, hinged surface attached to the aircraft's vertical stabilizer, shaped to minimize aerodynamic drag while still providing effective directional control. Modern aircraft typically link the rudder to foot pedals in the cockpit, and on larger aircraft, hydraulic or fly-by-wire systems assist the pilot in moving the surface against the aerodynamic forces acting on it at speed.
History
Rudders predate powered aviation by centuries, having been used on ships for steering long before aircraft existed, and early aircraft designers directly adapted the nautical concept for directional control in the air. Early aircraft rudders were simple flat surfaces controlled by foot pedals, a basic configuration that has remained conceptually unchanged even as materials and actuation systems have evolved considerably. As aircraft grew larger and faster through the mid-20th century, hydraulic assistance became necessary to help pilots move the rudder against increasing aerodynamic forces at speed. Modern airliners typically use fly-by-wire systems to control rudder movement, translating pilot pedal inputs into electronic signals that command hydraulic actuators, though the rudder's basic aerodynamic function has remained the same since aviation's earliest years.
