Overview
Fighter aircraft, early on also called pursuit aircraft, are military aircraft designed primarily for air-to-air combat, with the core mission of establishing air superiority over a battlespace. Domination of the airspace above a battlefield lets bombers and attack aircraft carry out tactical and strategic bombing of enemy targets while helping prevent the enemy from doing the same. A fighter's key performance characteristics include not just its firepower, but its speed and maneuverability relative to the aircraft it's likely to face in combat. Modern fighter jets have evolved through multiple generations of technology, from early gun-armed dogfighters to today's radar-guided, missile-armed, and in some cases stealth-optimized multirole aircraft capable of both air-to-air combat and precision ground attack.
History
Fighter aircraft development began during World War I, as opposing air forces quickly recognized the need for dedicated aircraft designed specifically to shoot down enemy reconnaissance and bomber planes. Fighter technology advanced dramatically through World War II, progressing from relatively slow biplanes at the war's start to fast monoplane fighters and, by the war's end, early jet-powered fighters. The Cold War drove rapid fighter development through successive technological generations, from early jet fighters through supersonic designs and eventually today's radar-guided, missile-armed, and in some cases stealth-optimized multirole fighters.
