Network carriers organize their routes around a hub-and-spoke system, concentrating flights through one or more central hub airports rather than flying every city pair directly. Passengers from smaller “spoke” cities connect through the hub to reach their final destination, letting an airline serve far more city pairs with fewer aircraft and routes than a point-to-point network would require. Delta Air Lines pioneered the model at its Atlanta hub in 1955, and most major US carriers adopted similar hub systems after deregulation in 1978. The system creates efficiencies of scale but adds travel time for connecting passengers, and it can let a dominant carrier turn its hub into a near-monopoly, commonly called a “fortress hub.”

History

Interline and codeshare agreements with other network carriers further extend a hub carrier's effective route map, letting a single ticket cover flights operated by multiple different airlines.

Operations

Hub operations require careful scheduling of connecting banks, in which dozens of flights arrive within a short window specifically so passengers can make connections before the next wave of departures begins. Ground operations at a hub airport must be able to service a large number of aircraft simultaneously during each connecting bank, requiring substantial gate capacity, baggage handling infrastructure, and ground crew staffing concentrated in relatively short bursts of activity. Network carriers coordinate extensively with codeshare and alliance partners to synchronize connecting itineraries, baggage transfers, and passenger rebooking when disruptions occur anywhere in the combined network. Irregular operations, such as weather disruptions at a major hub, can cascade quickly through a hub-and-spoke network, since a single hub closure can disrupt connections for passengers across the airline's entire route map.
