Overview
An aircraft mechanic, also called an aviation mechanic or aircraft maintenance technician (AMT), is a tradesperson who inspects, repairs, and maintains aircraft and aircraft systems, either performing the work directly or supervising it. In the United States, certification requirements for these technicians are set out under Part 65 of the Federal Aviation Regulations, with the credential commonly referred to as the Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate. Similar licensing systems exist in other countries, generally requiring a combination of formal training, supervised work experience, and written and practical examinations before certification is granted. Because aircraft safety depends heavily on correct maintenance, the role carries significant regulatory oversight, and certified technicians must keep their qualifications current through ongoing training and periodic review.
History
Formal aircraft maintenance certification developed alongside early aviation regulation in the 1920s and 1930s, as governments recognized the safety-critical nature of proper aircraft upkeep. In the United States, the modern Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification framework was established under the Federal Aviation Regulations, setting out standardized training, examination, and experience requirements for mechanics. Similar national licensing systems developed in other countries over subsequent decades, and international harmonization efforts since the late 20th century have worked to align certification standards as aircraft maintenance has become an increasingly global industry.
Design & Specifications
Maintenance technicians work with specialized tools and diagnostic equipment across airframe, engine, and avionics systems, following manufacturer-specified procedures for every inspection and repair.
Operations
Technicians perform scheduled inspections and repairs according to strict maintenance intervals, documenting all work in aircraft maintenance records that remain with the aircraft throughout its service life.
