Overview
An unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), also known as a combat drone or fighter drone, is an unmanned aerial vehicle that carries aircraft ordnance such as air-to-surface missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, or aerial bombs on hardpoints or within an internal weapons bay, letting it carry out tactical strikes commonly known as drone strikes. Recent advancements in UCAV programs, notably in Turkey and Australia, have demonstrated increasingly multi-role combat characteristics, combining beyond-visual-range air-to-air combat capability with traditional ground-attack roles. UCAVs are used both for precision strikes against high-value targets and for broader battlefield attack missions, offering militaries the ability to conduct armed missions without risking a human pilot. The category represents one of the fastest-evolving areas of military aviation, as autonomous targeting and multi-role capability continue to expand what these aircraft can do independently of direct human piloting.
History
Early unmanned combat aircraft concepts were explored during the Cold War, though the technology needed for reliable autonomous or remotely piloted weapons delivery remained impractical for decades. Modern UCAV development accelerated significantly from the early 2000s onward, as improvements in satellite communication, GPS guidance, and sensor technology finally made reliable remote weapons delivery genuinely practical. The US MQ-1 Predator and later MQ-9 Reaper, initially developed primarily for reconnaissance, were among the first UCAVs to be widely deployed in an armed combat role starting in the early 2000s. More recent UCAV programs, including advanced systems developed in Turkey and Australia, have pushed the technology further, demonstrating multi-role capabilities that combine air-to-air and ground-attack functions once thought to require a human pilot's judgment.
