Overview
In aviation, visual flight rules (VFR) are a set of regulations under which a pilot operates an aircraft in weather conditions clear enough for the pilot to see where the aircraft is going, specifically requiring conditions better than the basic VFR weather minima, known as visual meteorological conditions (VMC), as defined by the relevant aviation authority. Under VFR, the pilot must be able to operate the aircraft with visual reference to the ground and must visually avoid obstructions and other aircraft, rather than relying primarily on instruments. If weather conditions fall below VMC, pilots are required to switch to instrument flight rules, operating the aircraft primarily by reference to cockpit instruments rather than the outside view.
