Overview
Cargo airlines, also called air freight carriers, are airlines mainly dedicated to transporting freight by air rather than passengers, and some operate as divisions or subsidiaries of larger passenger carriers. Dedicated cargo airlines such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL run their own fleets of freighter aircraft and manage the entire freight transportation process themselves, while other airlines, including several major Gulf and international carriers, operate dedicated cargo divisions alongside their passenger business. Air cargo traffic is measured in tonne-kilometres, and as of a recent industry count it totaled over 260,000 million tonne-kilometres annually, split roughly evenly between dedicated freighter operations and belly cargo carried in the holds of passenger aircraft. During periods of reduced passenger travel, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, several major passenger airlines temporarily removed passenger seats from aircraft to carry additional cargo, underscoring how closely the passenger and freight sides of the industry can intersect.
History
Dedicated air cargo operations expanded significantly after World War II, as surplus military transport aircraft became available and international trade began recovering, giving rise to the first specialized cargo airlines. FedEx's 1971 founding, followed by its buildout of a centralized sorting hub model, established the modern integrated cargo carrier approach that companies like UPS and DHL later adopted and scaled globally. Major passenger airlines also built out dedicated cargo divisions over subsequent decades, and during the COVID-19 pandemic several converted passenger aircraft to carry additional freight as passenger travel collapsed, temporarily reshaping how cargo capacity was allocated industry-wide.

Cargo hub airports are built around specialized freight infrastructure, including dedicated cargo aprons, ULD staging areas, and large sorting warehouses positioned adjacent to the runway for fast aircraft-to-truck transfer. Integrated carriers' hubs, such as FedEx's facility in Memphis, feature enormous automated sorting systems capable of processing hundreds of thousands of packages during a single overnight sort window. Cargo hub runways and taxiways are typically designed to accommodate the largest freighter aircraft in regular service, since a hub's efficiency depends on quickly turning around wide-body freighters. Ground infrastructure at a cargo hub prioritizes truck and rail connectivity alongside aircraft handling, since freight often continues its journey by ground transport after arriving by air.
Operations
Cargo hub operations run on a tightly compressed overnight schedule for integrated carriers, with dozens of aircraft arriving within a narrow window, unloading, having their contents sorted, and departing again before morning delivery deadlines. Ground crews at a busy cargo hub must unload, sort, and reload enormous volumes of freight within just a few hours, requiring highly synchronized coordination between aircraft handling teams and the automated sorting system. Air cargo hubs not tied to a single integrated carrier instead coordinate a rotating schedule of different airlines' freighter flights throughout the day and night, based on each carrier's own network needs. Weather delays or mechanical issues affecting even one arriving flight can cascade through a hub's tightly scheduled sort window, requiring active real-time schedule adjustment by hub operations staff.
