Overview
In aviation, aircraft gross weight — also called all-up weight (AUW) — is the total weight of the aircraft at any given moment during flight or ground operation. This weight decreases over the course of a flight as fuel and oil are consumed, and it can also change due to payload drops or in-flight refueling. At the moment the brakes release for takeoff, gross weight equals takeoff weight; during flight, it's typically referred to as en-route or in-flight weight. Aircraft gross weight is constrained by several structural design limits established during certification, intended to prevent overloading the airframe or creating unacceptable handling characteristics, and pilots must calculate and respect these limits before every flight to ensure safe performance.
History
Early aircraft weight limits were determined largely through trial and error, since aviation pioneers had limited engineering data on how much structural stress a given airframe could safely withstand. Formal structural design weight categories and certification standards developed through the 1920s and 1930s as national aviation authorities began requiring documented proof that an aircraft could safely operate within specified weight limits. These certification requirements grew significantly more rigorous through the mid-20th century as commercial aviation expanded and the consequences of structural failure became better understood through accident investigation. Modern aircraft weight and balance calculations now rely on detailed, continuously updated documentation for every aircraft, reflecting decades of accumulated regulatory experience aimed at preventing overloading-related accidents.
